The Euclid Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Jimmie Parker, Sr., opened its 65th season at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 2, 2025 with an energizing mix of classical pieces featuring composers and settings from around the world.
From France, the audience was treated to Georges Bizet’s Les Toreadors from the Spanish-set 1875 opera Carmen. From Spain, Geronimo Gimenez’s 1897 Intermedio from La Boda de Luis Alonso will bring festive rhythms and cheerful melodies. From Russia, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1880 fantasia, Capriccio Italien, is based on his experiences in Rome. From Czechia, Vaclav Nelhybel’s monothematic 1967 Music for Orchestra will provide contrasting rhythms and moods. Also from Russia, Igor Stravinsky’s 1910 Berceuse and Finale from The Firebird Suite begins with a lullaby and ends with a celebration.
After intermission, the music took us to Armenia, with Aram Khachaturian’s 1940 Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, transcribed for flute by Jean-Pierre Rampal in 1968. Award-winning flautist Shreya Girish, who had her solo debut at age 16 with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, gave us a stunning performance of this fast-slow-fast concerto that plays homage to Armenian folk music.
